Fiat Premio (1985-1995)

Chevrolet Captiva 2013
The mid-size crossover produced in Mexico has received last-minute minor updates in order to maintain its good market participation for some years. There are new 17” alloy wheels and both bumpers were slightly redesigned to became more imponent, although nothing of that changes the fact this seven-year-old project will need a new generation soon. Internally, the seats and the door panels received new coatings, and the upper rearview mirror received a small screen dedicated to the reverse-gear camera images.

Volkswagen Fox 1.0 2013

Fiat Palio e Uno Interlagos

Volkswagen Golf R Cabrio
Sometimes, the “recipe” for creating a successful vehicle doesn’t demand millions of dollars invested in projecting new models from scratch. Complete renewals are always necessary after a certain time, but there are moments when it’s possible to make interesting additions to the showroom using mostly creativity and common sense. And since everyone likes to have good results and loves to have them without spending much money, that’s why VW decided to satisfy a popular request, now releasing this impressive convertible.
It’s interesting to observe that although Golf is a very traditional car, the families it generates on each generation never are. The sedan, for example, has followed it since the beginning but always with exclusive designs and different timing. The station wagon came only at the third phase and the fifth even had the Plus minivan variation, but the less common history surely is the convertible’s: adapting a conventional car to become roofless demands structural reinforcements and the entire removable roof system, which always raises the car’s cost. Therefore. in order to never have this cabrio too expensive, VW has used some special strategies. The second generation simply skipped this version, receving once again at the third. The fourth, in turn, was a very crafty facelift to give the new car’s front and rear styling to the older convertible. The fifth generation skipped the convertible again, and the sixth one receives it at the exact time when the seventh arrives. This doesn’t look like bad timing, though: since the new car uses an entirely different project, it seems like VW is trying to compensate the convertible’s higher costs by producing it on an already proven base. Anyway, the fact is this convertible only begins to describe a very nice example of what this article begins to comment.
In other words, besides the opportunity to keep selling Golf’s old platform for some time, since VW was releasing this very charismatic variation, why don’t take more advantage of it? Now it’s time to adapt the R version for the roofless version. There are the same elements of the hatchback, such as exclusive bumpers with more aggressive intakes and double exhaust tips, rear spoiler, 18” exclusive wheels (with an optional 19” set), lower suspension and the typical blue tone of the R line. The black fabric roof can be activated while driving at up to eighteen mph and takes eleven seconds to open or close. This car’s interior won’t be very different from what has been seen at this Golf’s phase, but once again the equipment list will be complete, including items such as bi-xenon headlights with daytime LEDs, performance seats and black-painted calipers, but the most awaited powertrain specifications to know definitely weren’t those: this car will bring once again the 2.0L TSi. There are 261 hp of power and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired to DSG transmission in order to achieve 6s4 from 0 to 60 mph and the electronically-limited 155-mph top speed. These numbers are so good that give this car the title of fastest VW convertible ever produced… along with a 8.26-l/100 km consumption, and the reminder that all of this was achieved with the exact opposite of projecting from scratch.

Qoros GQ3
Regardless of quality matters, wouldn’t be weird to see a minivan projected by Ferrari? A big pick-up truck designed by Citroën? Or a compact sedan made by Land Rover? Although most automakers now place their bets at participating in more categories, no one could ever prosper in all of them because each one has built its name around a particular market share. The Chinese cars could only became famous outside their homeland due to cheaper prices, but now there’s one brand trying to revert this situation.
This blog has already mentioned the Chinese automakers’ current attempt to follow the Japanese and Korean’s path of expanding their sales into the Western countries, using JAC Heyue A30’s article. The basic idea consists not only of taking cars which are really capable of pleasing these customers but also of bringing something extra, an exclusive appeal that could make people abandon the traditional brands in order to give those Chinese newcomers a try. They’ve already started to sell specially in America and Europe, but their vehicles always use the low-cost appeal. They came in several categories, but most of them are suitable only for the customers whose only concern is precisely the cheaper price, even though it’s tied up to questionable quality standards. However, these brands must’ve started to dislike this deal because, as a matter of fact, not every brand would like to see their products indirectly tagged as worse than their competitors. Today it would be very hard to only “erase” this reputation among the Western customers, so the Chinese decided to follow the opposite path: in order to mingle better and expand its sales, Chery is creating a luxury division. Yes, exactly like Honda did with Acura, Nissan with Infiniti and Toyota with Lexus around thirty years ago. And also as all of them there’s a Latin-like name: Qoros.
Mentioning those examples doesn’t leave much more to explain. Like GQ3, Qoros’ cars will have fancier designs with much bigger Western inspiration, which means aggressive designs combined to organic shapes, without deeper creases like the Japanese or other odd shapes such as what QQ uses. GQ3 is one of the first three vehicles planned to hit the streets in the next few years and it really represents an evolution from what is seen at Chery’s cars, but it isn’t hard to notice that Qoros still has where to evolve: details such as the big tail lights and the even bigger chrome line above the front grille really could’ve received a more elegant design. But the German-Chinese design reveals a very big interior, with plenty of space for five occupants and lots of luxury: the two-colored coating uses wooden details to give a higher-quality impression, but also hides that GQ3 was projected to achieve the perfect grade at the EuroNCAP tests. Not to mention the trim levels will be very high. Qoros plans to start selling GQ3 in China late 2013, with the European sales beginning a few months later. Besides this sedan, they will also offer a station wagon and a crossover. There are no technical specifications for GQ3 so far.

Teach Google-search about your blog with the Data Validator
Recently, Google announced a new feature in Webmaster Tools called the Data Validator.
This is like a simpler way for website-owners (which is what bloggers really are) to tell Blogger about structured information that they put onto their sites - by point-and-clicking at the information on screen, rather than by learning the intricacies of Rich Snippets and the snippet testing tool.
What they've released so far is just an English-language tool for events - "such as concerts, sporting events, exhibitions, shows, and festivals".
To use it you need to
visit Webmaster Tools, select your site, click the "Optimization" link in the left sidebar, and click "Data Highlighter".
And obviously you need to have verified the blog in Webmaster Tools before you start, and to do the "learning" with the same account. NB Some blogs will be automatically verified, but some won't: if yours isn't, then the best way to do this is to choose Alternate Methods and choose HTML Tag - then add the meta-tag to your blog.
The bottom line is that for this to work, you need to put the information into your blog the same way every time (aka in a "consistent format"). What will be interesting to see is exactly how "consistent" it needs to be - I suspect that the tool will probably get smarter over time.
I haven't had a chance to try it yest, /But I am using a Blogger to manage the website for a small choir which has a concert in January. So I think I'll start by structuring the announcement of the last concert in June 2012, and then see how well it applies the learning to the next one.
BMW Z4 2013
At this moment of December, most automakers have already finished their releases cycle for the year, in order to start preparing for the next one’s. However, since there’s the Detroit event already next month, it won’t take long for all that buzz start again. That must be why BMW decided to anticipate one more release to 2012. Z4 has changed so little that it couldn’t even be called a facelift. It’s better to define it as very slight improvements to a roadster which actually is many years far from needing any deeper changes.
Z4’s current generation has arrived in 2009, but it really doesn’t look old. Maybe also because BMW is still using the same design identity, but the fact is this roadster was very well designed. There was a big evolution from the previous generation, because the same controversial straight lines and very strong creases received a whole new interpretation. The car became more opulent without losing the initial concept. The volumes became more aggressive, with a change of size and proportions which did nothing but increase the pure, crude sportiness impression this line has transmitted for more than thirty years, since Z1. Since Z4 is one of the few BMW who aren’t part of an entire family (another one is 7-Series, for example), the designers had s freedom while working on it and really used it – it’s easy to observe that looking at this roadster reminds of all the BMWs in general, but not too much of any particular one. Besides that, since this generation is still young, there’s no need of performing big updates: the car received new LEDs daytime lights and new wheels designs, in 17” or 18”. In other words, it’s probable that only the biggest fans will manage to recognize a 2013 Z4 while in movement, but it still isn’t a reason to complaint: it would be so hard and expensive to perform partial changes to this design without losing the balance that it’s really better to only touch it when it’s time to give a whole new generation.
Therefore, the Germans focused at improving the interior. Z4 received a new coating that joins Alcantara to the usual leather for the seats, along with some piano-black-painted details. It still brings very good trim levels, including the big touchscreen which controls the iDrive infotainment system. There are three new external colors, but only the option showed at these pictures brings the Hyper Orange pack: this is the responsible for the internal details using this same color, matched with white and piano-black ones to create a very creative cabin; Audi, for instance, never lets the black and aluminum-silver go away from its cars. These pictures’ roadster also received a whole new trim level with an also new engine: sDrive18i comes for the entry level with a 2.0L turbo, whose 150 hp can be paired with manual six-speed transmission or automatic eight-speed, in order to go from 0 to 60 mph in 7s9 and to the top speed of 137 mph. This car will hit the North-American streets in next March.

5 butir bawang merah
3 siung bawang putih
2 cm jahe

NVIDIA Tegra 4 Processor
Image from ChipHell |
The codename of the Tegra 4 platform is Wayne, just like Tegra 3 carries the name of Kal-El, like a certain Kryptonian. As odd as it sounds, Kal-El is severely outmatched, or will be. Wayne will be six times more powerful than its predecessor. A roadmap slide depicting the core layout of the SoC (system-on-chip) made its way to Chinese website Chip Hell, somehow.
After the necessary translations, a promising picture took form. Tegra 4 keeps the 4-PLUS-1 architecture of Tegra 3, where there are four main ARM cores and a fifth one that takes over for all the others when nothing strenuous is running. It is a very efficient method of cutting power consumption. No need to keep everything on full throttle when just looking at a web page after all.
Naturally, besides the ARM cores, a graphics processing unit is used. As seen in the picture, it takes up a fourth of the whole die, with its 72 CUDA cores. NVIDIA promises very good performance at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, as well as Full HD (1080p), where the screen refresh rate can be of 120 Hz. Perhaps we'll actually see 3D-capable tablets up for sale before long.
Other than that, the Tegra 4 Wayne includes support for USB 3.0, dual-channel DDR3L memory and, unless our eyes deceive us, 4K support as well.
NVIDIA may or may not launch Wayne at CES 2013 (Consumer Electronics Show), between January 8 and 11. A “delay” until MWC 2013 (Mobile World Congress) in February could happen too. We've heard of PC companies diverting budget away from CES in order to have enough for the latter, so it wouldn't be too much of a shock for NVIDIA to schedule its move for later.

GMC Sierra 1500
If Silverado received a new generation, why wouldn’t Sierra? And since they’re twins, why one of them would have to wait more? GM has shown what could be named as good parenting skills, and gave the new generation to both pick-ups at the same time. Besides that, this mother has also realized that they’re no longer a pair of babies, so allowed them to get bigger differentiation – each one has a much more individual design than their previous generations. With all that in mind, how about meeting the second of these siblings?
Badge engineering is a very tricky concept, and you must’ve heard this a lot of times – even without leaving this blog. There are many variables to consider, so using the set A or the set B is the biggest responsible for the car’s success or failure. When it comes to these two pick-ups, this new generation turned Sierra fancier than its sister, not only because of what differences were applied but also for how. GMC’s truck also received the aluminum hood, improved chassis with hydroformed front section, doors which now don’t reach the roof and other items to reduce the weight and obtain better aerodynamics, but the style changes manage to produce great effects without being too extensive. The intention seems to be creating conceptual differences, rather than more explicit ones. The bumper, for instance, is as chrome as Silverado’s, but received a more complex design. The grille must have the same size, but received big frames in order to reduce the size impression. Besides that, there’s a bigger external-color-painted contour around the elements, which helps to visually disconnect the items and gives a solidness impression. But nothing says “this is GM’s fancier truck” better than the headlights: can you notice that they’re shared with Silverado? Well, if at Chevrolet they come in pairs, Sierra avoids the extravagance by bringing only two, and wraps them in elegance with LED daytime illumination.
GMC also updated Sierra with Silverado’s new safety package, including the camera-based system to prevent forward collisions and lane-keeping system with sound and seat vibration alerts. There’s also electric steering for all versions, in a redesigned cabin whose biggest differences from Chevrolet’s truck are the red details, to contrast with the black and silver of the internal coatings. Sierra also received the latest version of IntelliLink in an 8” touchscreen: it isn’t hard to guess this is nothing more than GMC’s version of MyLink. The bed options depend on the cabin type: extended cab is paired only with the 6.5-feet one, while the regular cab adds only the 8-feet and the crew cab adds only the 5.8-feet, 8-inch option. There are two or four-driven wheels options, and three engines: like what’s seen on Silverado, Sierra now uses a 4.3L V6, a 5.3L V8 or a 6.2L V8, always with a six-speed automatic transmission. Those engines have several technologies to improve the efficiency, such as direct injection and cylinder-deactivation: when riding with light loads, the V6 turns off two and the V8 four of them. In other words, the biggest difference between Sierra and its Chevrolet twin sister is purely conceptual, like two more separate trim levels of the same vehicle. They will hit the streets early next year, but until now there’s no information about the price lists.

Chevrolet Silverado 3
It’s nice to observe that each country has a very strong connection with a particular car category. The Europeans love hatchbacks, the Australians are crazy about sedan-based pickups, the Brazilians are very fond of sedans… and the North-Americans can’t resist a big, powerful pick-up truck. Their biggest competition is among the mid-sized ones, such as Ford F-150 and RAM 1500. While those needed only slight restyles, it was time for Silverado to receive a whole new generation. And what a great one it is!
These trucks’ sales are so big and stable that they don’t really need to perform big visual changes, since they seem to already have found what their public wants. That’s why, like its competitors, Silverado didn’t make a design revolution from its previous phase. It’s nice to see that it managed to become more modern along with becoming more imponent: the increased fenders are just the right addition to the cleanly-shaped sides, while the rear directs the attention only to the big tail lights and the brand’s logo. But the front is what surely deserves the bigger compliments: not only became tougher with the big grille and the chrome details, as also features a very stylish interpretation of the brand’s classical trucks design: the headlights are also divided in two, just like the 1998 model. But pick-up trucks doesn’t attract clients only with good looks. Silverado’s aerodynamics became much better not only because of the softened design but also because of the new doors, which were improved at fixation and size in order to reduce the internal noise. Besides that, the redesigned chassis uses hydroformed front section and lots of high-resistance steel at the cabin, resulting at a much bigger collision resistance. All of that is offered in Crew Cab and Extended Cab, whose box options go from 5’8” feet to 8’, depending on the cab option.
Another nice feature of the most recent pick-ups is the cabin. Since the 1990s they’ve been receiving so many luxury and comfort improvements that in nowadays it wouldn’t be very hard to mistake them with sedans or minivans. There are several contrasts in this cabin, which are actually very nice to observe: the new dashboard still brings many gauges like any big pick-up demands, but right next to it there’s the new console with a huge touchscreen signing that this car also has the new MyLink entertainment system, packed with multiple USB ports, Bluetooth connection and additional commands at the steering wheel – all the pick-ups have a very wide central armrest, right? Well, Silverado’s is a cover to this very big storage space, divided for fitting smartphones, laptops and other electronic devices. However, none of that has distracted Chevrolet that this is a pick-up truck: the box has LED lights beneath the rails, its corners have built-in steps for easier access and a great safety pack: there are electric steering, four-wheel disc ABS brakes, forward-collision-warning system with cameras and lane-keeping system with seat vibration and audible alert. All of that moves with the Ecotec3 engine family: direct injection and variable valve timing are some of the components used in the three available options. There’s a 4.3L V6, 5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8, all of them with cylinder deactivation when with light load.

How to find free pictures for your blog, using Creative-Commons search
What is Creative Commons
Previously I've described how copyright applies to bloggers, how you can protect your blog-content from copyright theives, and what you can do if they take you work anyway. The focus in that series was looking after your own rights.
But rights always come with responsibilities. The details vary by country, but in general you cannot just copy other people's recent work without their permission - in the same way that they cannot copy yours.
Some people, though, are happy to give other people permission to use their work, often with certain conditions (eg you must including an attribution link to the creator).
Creative Commons is an easy, legal way for creators to give permission for things they create to be used by other people. It is a framework which offers "licenses" that creators (writers, artists, composers, poets, etc) can apply to their work to say that other people can make copies, and what conditions apply (eg non-commercial use, only if you attribute me, etc)
To use it, authors, artists, etc don't need to register their work. Instead, they go to the Creative Commons website and get code / text to put with their published work to show what rules apply.
Then they can publish or upload their pictures, writing etc anywhere they want, and by linking to the licence the work is as protected as anything on the internet can be.
How to find pictures & music that are Creative Commons licensed
Creative Commons have a very useful search tool, found at http://search.creativecommons.org
This is not a search engine. Instead it is a front-end-tool that lets you choose:
- The keywords you want to search for (the search words)
- The type of license that you need (use for commercial purposes - yes or no, modify, adapt, build upon - yes/no)
- Which of the file host/search services to use (eg flickr, Google, Open clip art library - etc)
Once you have entered the search options, click on the source that you want to look in, and you are taken to that site and shown the results of the search-query and options you entered.
For example, when I entered:
- "Christmas"
- Commercial allowed (because I wanted to make a picture to use in Blogger-HAT, where I have advertising)
- Changes allowed (because I wanted an image that I could use as the basis for another one, rather than exactly as it is now)
and clicked on Fotopedia, I was shown:
From here I could use the search tools in Fotopedia to refine my image-search and find just the right picture that I could use to represent a Christmas carol worksheet on my blog.
What sources are included
Today, the sources that are linked to from Creative Commons search are:- Eurpoeana - media
- Flickr - pictures
- Fotopedia - pictures
- Google web - web search results
- Google images - pictures
- Jamenda - music
- Open Clip Art Library - images
- SpinXpress - media
- Wikimedia Commons - media
- YouTube - video
- Pixabay - images
- ccMixter - music
- SoundCloud - music
It wouldn't surprise me if this list grow/shrinks, as sites become more or less useful as sources of public-domain or creative-commons-licensed materials.
Things to watch out for
Creative Commons cannot guarantee that the results of searches that start in their tools will always be available for re-use: source systems may change their approach, items may be mis-tagged, content owners may change their mind, etc. So they recommend that you should always click-through to the original image in the source site, and double-check the license and attribution requirements there. Also, some sites may allow you to link directly to the copy of the image on their site. this can be a lot quicker than making your own copy, uploading it and included it in your blog. But doing this means that the image will not be used as the thumbnail-image for your post. And if the picture is ever removed from the original site - or its web-site address there changes - then the link in your blog will not work any more.

Google product cancellations for December 2012
appear to have less impact on most Blogger users than their recent seasonal purges.
Today, Google have announced their next round of discontinued products - they used to call it "spring cleaning", but this time around have at least acknowledged that it's winter for half the world, and summer for the other half!
Some Google Calendar features are to be discontinued, specifically:
- Creating new reservable times on a Calendar using Appointments Smart Rescheduler
- Add gadget by URL.
- Check your calendar via SMS/text message
- Create event via SMS/text message (GVENT).
My guess is that this may affect some Blogger users, who have integrated a calendar with a blog. It's a fairly specialist area, so likely to be a small number.
There are a few other discontinued features, but I suspect they won't affect bloggers to much extent:
- Google Sync a tool giving access to Google Mail, Calendar and Contacts via Microsoft Exchange's ActiveSync protocol - discontinued, except for Google Apps for Business, Government and Education.
- Google Calendar Sync
- Google Sync for Nokia S60
- SyncML, a contacts sync service used by some older mobile devices.
- Issue Tracker Data API: a tool that lets client applications view and update issues on Project Hosting on Google Code via API feeds.
- Punchd an app that keeps loyalty cards on smartphones
Next Android OS - KOLACHE
This is by no means a confirmation of any kind :-) I have no insider knowledge whatsoever about Android, this was purely based on public information/rumors. (Longer story: at first I hadn't drawn the rightmost robot at all, but then I thought the drawing would be outdated as soon as a new version/dessert would come out, so I thought I'd take one extra step, using the best guesses for the name currently out there, so that the drawing wouldn't be outdated so soon.
KOLACHE |
My second choice would be "Android Kifli ", another K starter crescent shaped pastry. We have to wait for Google's announcement next year (2013). Till then ... keep guessing... and go Google, name it KOLACHE.
