Google product cancellations for October 2012

This Quick-Tip is about the products that Google is dropping, or making changes to, from October 2012.

Google's latest announcement about retiring products came out yesterday (Saturday).   Seems odd that they're calling it "spring cleaning", since it's autumn / fall in most of the countries where major Google products are based.

So what's on the list that will affect Blogger-users?

AdSense for Feeds is being switched off - this has never been much of an earner for me, but I guess it could be significant for some people who have very large subscriber audiences.   There's one line that worries me a little ""Publishers can continue to use FeedBurner URLs powered by Google, so they won’t need to redirect subscribers to different URLs." - it's saying "no change to Feedburner", but I wonder why they feel the need to say this.

Storage limits in Picasa and Google Drive "will be consolidated over the next few months" - we get five gig of free storage across both products, not in each one.   But on the plus side, people who've paid for storage in one of these services will be able to  use it in either of them.

No new Google News Badges will be issued from mid-October, and there will be no more Recommended Sections.   I don't know these products well, but they may be relevant for people who have built a blog that shows news feeds.

Insights for Search has been merged into Google Trends, and expanded to cover more countries.   Trends for Websites is no longer being updated though, which could be missed by people who use this tool to figure out what to blog about.

+1 Reports in Webmaster Tools are being removed, because Google Analytics has better tools.   I'm guessing that any bloggers who are seriously tracking their +1 performance will be using Analytics anyway.

    Paris Motor Show 2012

Due to time availability matters, I need to restrict myself to write only about the most important foreign car releases, in order to conciliate with this blog’s initial purpose, which was to write only about Brazilian cars. However, reading about an exposition as big as this French one drives every car fan crazy very easily, so I’ll make my best to maintain this special article. The cars will be organized alphabetically so you can find them easily. In every opportunity I’ll update it with much more concise texts of each release, but you’ll can click at their picture to access a big photo gallery. I hope you enjoy!

Audi SQ5Audi SQ5 Concept: How about the first Audi S model not only to use diesel but also to be a crossover? Only 50 units will be produced, all of them in the exclusive Aral Blue. There’s also metal-painted details and luxury items such as xenon headlights to follow the impressive look started with those gorgeous wheels and finished by the typical four exhaust pipes. The interior will take the attentions with a contrast between black and white among several parts, such as seats and steering wheel. Opening the hood we see a V6 3.0 with two turbos and 313 hp, to get from 0 to 60 mph in 5s1.

Citroën C3 PicassoCitroën C3 Picasso: The European compact minivan received its first half-age face-lift, showing an improvement of the design created by the Brazilian department to its own market. It now features daytime LEDs, a conventional front air intake and restyled trunk lid, besides minor changes. There is a big panoramic sunroof, and some versions now can receive the eMyWay navigation system, which also brings USB port and Bluetooth connection. The interior received some new sophistication items, but this car’s main focus is really the casual look: there are two new color options, blue and white.

Citroën DS3 CabrioCitroën DS3 Cabrio: Cars like this one could explain why “charm” starts with C from “Citroën”. As if it wasn’t enough to entice from the customers who like the luxury of hatches such as Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper to the ones who like to drive faster, Citroën releases the open-roof version of the DS line pioneer. There were changes only at the roof, now retractile in several points, looking like a spoiler, and finally dropping also with the rear windshield and reminding the old VW Beetle’s cover, but never touching the sides. It’ll use two 1.6 engines: 108 hp with diesel and 148 hp with gasoline.

Dacia Sandero StepwayDacia Sandero Stepway: It’s really nice to see what the Romanian brand did with their famous line. After revealing both Logan and Sandero, they didn’t take long to offer the reprojected light off-road version, which originally is a Brazilian creation, along with the entire first Sandero, and since 2007 had huge success. Thus, as what was done with Logan, the hatchback evolved the original style, rather to change it. There are some plastic protective details outside, roof rack and 16” wheels. The high-selling formula consists only in that, so the engine options won’t change from the urban car.

Fiat Panda 4x4Fiat Panda 4x4: Innovative at the ‘80s, this version was so well-accepted that became a tradition to Panda. The latest generation now receives s traction with a visual package which resembles very much the Brazilian Fiat Uno Way. There are exclusive bumpers and wheels and some plastic details to protect the painting, which by the way received two new options. Inside, there are three options of colors, ecologic leather details and ELD differential lock to help at the off-road tracks, item also offered in Brazil. It’ll be sy-equiped and use the TwinAir 0.9 with gasoline or Multijet II 1.3 with diesel.

Ford FiestaFord Fiesta: This one has already appeared a few days before. The current generation now receives the half-age face-lift, whose design has received some changes to follow Ford’s latest design rules. Besides the resemblance with C-Max and Fiesta ST at the front end, the car received new technologies. The Active City Stop system helps to avoid collisions by reducing the speed, while MyKey brings parental control to restrict the car’s top speed and the maximum sound volume. It also comes with Ford Sync and EcoBoost engines, with the 1.0 option expected to bring excellent consumption rates.

Ford TransitFord Transit: Also called Tourneo, Ford’s small commercial van receives a new generation with such a nice interpretation of the Kinetic design that it barely reminds a cargo vehicle. It now uses a worldwide platform to enable its selling at many more markets, but at a first moment it’ll go only to Europe and North America. There are lots of technologies to improve the efficiency specially at the new Connect version, but the best examples of that are the engines: respectively, Transit will use a 2.2 Duratorq with diesel and a 3.5 EcoBoost with gasoline, offering front, rear or AWD traction options.

Honda CR-ZHonda CR-Z: As it was announced a few days ago, this hybrid sports car receives its first face-lift although it completes only three years. But they weren’t big, restricted only to the front design and minor changes at the interior, according to Honda. They preserved the large color options’ list and also the engine: if you want an ecological car but avoiding the family style, CR-Z solves your problem with the 1.5 i-VTEC and the electric engine, but with some improvements to gain 13 hp and now produce 135 hp. This power allows it to go from 0 to 60 mph in 9s and to the top speed of 123,6 mph, with 4,16 l/100 km.

Hyundai i30 3-doorHyundai i30 2-door: The second generation came so appealing and stylish that nobody remembered 4-door cars are usually are designed for families. But Hyundai did, and now shows what you can think as a half-way between the already known new i30 and Veloster. There wasn’t need to deep changes to obtain the new body option, so they also brought an exclusive front air intake and fog lights design. One of its four engine options is an 1.6 diesel with 97 g/km of CO2 emissions, and the really nice Flex Steer system, which allows the driver to change the steering resistance to better suit any driving condition.

Kia CarensKia Carens 4: Ten years ago, who could say Kia would become a true high-level automaker? From that excessively neutral design from the 1990s and 2000s, they developed their own style rules and achieved huge success with each car that received Peter Schreyer’s magical touch. Now is the time to apply it to their mid-size minivan, which attracts by a more dynamical look, using organic lines to avoid the old-fashioned impression of its previous generations this will start a really nice fight with Ford B-Max. The biggest info released so far is that Carens’ platform is shared with the new Cerato.

Lancia FlaviaLancia Flavia: Badge engineering matters aside, it’s impossible to deny this car is classy. The luxury Italian brand’s latest product spends 16,1 by 5,9 feet in an elegant cabriolet design which features the best of both Chrysler and Lancia design departments, without resorting to exaggerated sporty items or bright colors in order to achieve a much more mature impression. It’s redundant to say that it has lots of comfort and security equipments, but it’s worth to see the combination of black and white used at the interior, whose seats were designed to four occupants. This car uses a 2.4 with 170 hp.

Mini Cooper JCW GPMini Cooper JCW GP: If you’re tired of so many special Coopers, this one has a different appeal. Is “the fastest Cooper ever” enough to attract you? If not, how about saying it defeated Nürburgring Nordschleife it in only 8m23s? Besides of the 17” alloy wheels, painting and stickers, this car received a whole new aerodynamic kit and lost even the rear seats. And you think that’s it? Well, start to smile, because you’re wrong: the omnipresent 1.6 turbo was improved again and now takes the car from 0 to 60 mph in 6s3 and to the top speed of 150,4 mph. There will be produced 2.000 units.

Renault Clio EstateRenault Clio Estate: After the first reveal made by “accident” in a video around the hatch’s release, now the station wagon officially debuts its gorgeous design. It’s amazing how Renault extended the hatch’s style at the same time that gave it own personality. Clio Estate is still very sporty but became more elegant, with smooth surfaces and black-painted columns to visually join the windows and make the whole car seem longer. The engine options will be shared with the urban Clio, but the extra 7,9 inches increase helped at the 430 L trunk, which can increase by folding the rear seats.

Renault Clio RSRenault Clio RS 200 Turbo: The fourth generation has received one of Clio’s most iconic versions. The name anticipates the 200 hp and 239,3 Nm generated by an 1.6 with direct injection and double-clutch automatic transmission, whose technologies also bring a 25% lower fuel consumption, according to Renault. This car has three driving modes, but the coolest feature is the R-Sound Effect: it digitalizes the engine sound to transfer to the cabin through the speakers. Clio RS offers Sport and Cup versions, this one with more rigid suspension and Brembo brakes for better track performance.

Toyota Auris TouringToyota Auris Touring: After first revealing the hatchback version, the Auris line is now completed. The design is more familiar, but still is much more modern than what’s usually expected for these cars, specially by the use of items such as the rear spoiler. The European wagon has increased 11 inch at the wheelbase in order to achieve bigger internal space, but a really nice item is the panoramic sunroof, who takes advantage of the very inclinated windshield to compose a huge glass area. The trunk size wasn’t revealed yet, but one really nice feature is that Auris will have a hybrid option.

Volkswagen Cross CaddyVolkswagen Cross Caddy: After extending the wheelbase, using two kinds of fuel and celebrating its own 30th birthday, the German small van joined the Cross series, which has Golf and Polo’s versions in Europe and Fox, Saveiro and SpaceFox’s in Brazil. Caddy follows them with exterior plastic details such as fenders and footboards, and protective bars at the bumpers. But some items remember this isn’t a car to travel through rough tracks with: chrome roof rack and 17” alloy wheels and LED daylights go much better with the city. The engine options will be shared with the urban Caddy.

Volvo V40 Cross CountryVolvo V40 Cross Country: This car has always been subversive: it’s only the second Volvo’s modern hatchback and also using a V-name, until now restricted to the station wagons. But now it appeals to genetics and receives Cross Country version, which became famous with V70. Thus, as the pioneer sister, V40 combines a light off-road style with urban fashion items, resulting at exclusive bumper design, roof rack and 1,57 inch taller suspension sharing the same car with chrome protective items and 19” wheels. Besides that, it uses the 213 hp 2.0 or the 2.5 T5 with 254 hp, which allows a 0 to 60 mph at 6s1.

Are you missing some of the cars exposed at the event? Some of them have already received their own articles, with detailed information and more pictures, and they all can be found clicking here or searched by name at the top left field of this blog. If you’d like to see a bigger text like those for any of the cars listed here, just leave a comment here asking so, and it’ll be published it as soon as possible.

Google Groups now has a "My Discussions" view

This Quick-Tip is about how to see the posts you made in Google Groups - in particular in the Blogger Product Forum.

I used to be quite active in the previous Blogger Help Forum.   But since they switched to the new Google Groups based Blogger Product Forum, I've been less enthusiastic:

    • The design doesn't work as well on the netbook that I use a lot of the time
    • It wasn't easy to look up questions that I'd answered previously to see whether the answer was helpful.

The old system used to tell me that there were new posts in topics that I'd posted in, so it was very easy to go back and either give more help (kind of "after sales service") or hear from people who I'd been able to help (good motivation for helping other people.).

Today I noticed that a feature which is almost as good has been introduced to Google Groups.

The left-hand navigation area now has an entry for "My Discussions".  Choosing it shows all posts with author:me.

This is a list of posts, not a list of questions, and the ones with new posts since I last logged in are not in bold.   So it's not quite as good as the previous approach.   But it's close enough for me to take more interest in questions that I contributed to previously, which is good for both me and (I hope!) the person who asked the question.

      Citroën C4 L

Citroën C4 LOne of Citroën’s biggest news at its homeland’s Motor Show is, in fact, a Chinese car. The very first creation of the brand’s Shanghai Design Center comes out with an excellent result in many ways, but also with the concern of joining an even harder market than what was faced by its predecessor, called C4 Pallas. This time it was already born with a global style, in order to replace its previous generation along with the initial C4, whose design was originally made in France and only as a hatchback, but without the mistakes of the past.

And what would be those mistakes? The first one is more likely to be defined as a “conceptual exaggeration”, applied to what was called the Coupé version. While the 5-door hatchback’s style gave an as elegant as commonplace overall impression, they decided to attract the spotlights with the 3-door. The clean and well-defined lines went from the front to the sides, but the rear end had a very abrupt cut, with the rear windshield forming a slightly concave with the trunk lid. Although creative, this solution wasn’t much different from the contemporary Renault Mégane’s, but wasn’t very well received at some markets. The second mistake was made by Citroën’s Chinese joint-venture with Dongfeng: the European market’s rejection to small and medium sedans used to result at hard times to the emergent countries: those cars are really well-accepted in them, but always with price limitations. So to adapt a three-volumes version from a car whose original project never considered it and sharing as many parts as possible in order to lower production costs winded up as a really hard task. PSA-Dongfeng’s first attempt with C4 was called C-Triomphe, but ended with a very much bigger focus at the internal space than at the style, so it never had good sales. But instead of phasing it out they launched another: the C-Quatre, smaller and more sporty.

Citroën C4 LHowever, Citroën now wants to avoid the situation of having two sedans with small sales, and decided to concentrate those customers into a much more stylish car. The now called C4 L (for Lounge, to highlight its bigger internal space) follows the company’s current rule of leaving the style eccentricities to the DS- line and focusing the C- line in a more discreet design. But the pictures already show what’s the nicest part of all this: getting discreet didn’t mean to get boring at all. C4 L now gives the very pleasant impression of a sophisticated car, with modern and well-designed lines and volumes and without the excessive length of its predecessor. The sad part is the loss of charm items such as the perfume diffuser, central dashboard and the fixed-center steering wheel, but it still attracts easily when it comes to the comfort and technology items: there are many shared parts with the hatchback, including central touchscreen to give access to the entertainment functions reverse view camera and GPS navigator and leather coating. This car will use the 136 hp VTi engine, and the already classical 1.6 THP at the 150 hp and 170 hp versions. Citroën intends to sell it with focus at the emergent markets, and produce it at one plant of each of the planned regions, starting at 2013.

      Opel Mokka

Opel MokkaThis one is already popular in Europe. Unfortunately it’s also widely known that Opel’s current financial situation isn’t good, but they are following the right path. Instead of watching their cars become older and only reduce the prices to keep the good sales, Opel is investing at new products. Entering at new categories and showing whole new projects, with very nice style and high quality. They could really increase their sales by expanding the offering to more countries, but until that happens it’s worth to show their youngest child.

Mokka is nothing more than a Buick Encore with minor design changes, but this is the opposite of a bad thing. This is a global GM project which also turned out into Trax, the Chevrolet and Holden’s version. Its importance comes from being the group’s very first attempt of debuting among the compact crossovers, since the late Chevrolet Tracker was only a rebadged Suzuki Grand Vitara from that time’s generation. It doesn’t take too much attention at city traffic to see how popular this kind of car has become, with a huge variety of sizes, prices and brands. GM has always offered several options of SUVs and most recently also crossovers, but never a small one, capable of competing with cars like Fiat Sedici. Now they did as their rivals: took an urban platform and drew a smaller and lighter crossover, with lots of resemblance with the street cars both inside and outside. Although sharing a lot of pieces, Trax (which will go to Brazil as Tracker) features some design differences in order to suit better its public, which will be the emergent markets. This blog explains with more details at its own article, but the focus was making it resemble bigger models at the same time it brings some urban luxuries, to result a city car with the visual “toughness” of a SUV.

Opel MokkaHowever, Mokka (and therefore Encore, too) has a different proposal. While Trax’s lines try to make it seem longer, the German brother’s want to make it compact and nimble. The idea is to attract both the customers who want more than a hatchback and the ones who don’t need the bigger size of an SUV with a formula that can attract many kinds of people, since middle-aged women to groups of early-twenties friends. The interior seems to follow the latest trends such as several color options to console and seats coating, but the central big touchscreen is missed: the entertainment system is controlled by a big button panel beneath the air outlets. But this car has plenty of space for four occupants (a fifth one is welcome since doesn’t ask for much space) and a high level of security and comfort items. And when it comes to engines, this coffee-named crossover will offer three options: the intermediate option is an 1.7 diesel with 130 hp, while with gasoline the entry one is the 1.6 16v with 115 hp and the top one the 1.4 turbo with 140 hp. Mokka is being exposed at the Paris Motor Show, but its sales have already started at some European markets already with excellent results: Opel has already received more than 25,000 requests of their first small crossover.

      Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive

Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric DriveFrom every angle you look this car there’s something taking your attention. The stylish coupe design is already widely known, and so are the gullwing doors, but when you get used to the exclusive chrome blue painting, take a look at the front air intake. Its different design reveals this car is not an usual SLS, but this low-profile sign isn’t followed at all by this car’s performance. This new version has everything to add some new values to the current idea of electric vehicles, and at this article you’ll read why.

What are your oldest memories about electric cars? Maybe Saturn EV1, Honda Insight or even the hybrid Toyota Prius, aren’t them? All these cars came in the late 1990s as the very first alternatives to the massive use of petrol, but at first it was very hard to convince people to buy one. And why can’t we blame them? Because in spite of all the green appeal, their problems at that time didn’t affect too much their quality as products, but their image. The autonomy was very limited and the batteries were a headache: too expensive to get rid of the old ones properly and too expensive to obtain new ones. As little doom is silly, their prices were also much higher than their petrol similars. Besides that, those engines could barely take their weight to street speeds, so you had to forget luxury and specially performance – the lack of the typical engine noise was a permanent reminder of that. And if you thought their design could help you pretend to everyone outside you’d bought the perfect car… They were well-designed, there’s no denial of that. But their conception of that was the literal one: if their primitive batteries were as heavy as necessary, the only way of optimizing the limited power was to facilitate the air flow, rather than focus at stylish lines.

Mercedes-Benz SLS Electric DriveThis combination couldn’t help giving the EVs the terrible impression of taking a lot of your money in exchange of not so palpable benefits. However, it took some more years but this scenario winded up starting to change. Their big leap begun when some movie stars bought themselves some of them, and when Arnold Schwarzenegger estabilished more severe environmental politics when governing the North-American state of California. These facts helped to give the EVs the direction they needed: they dived into the popular culture. Day after day their fame got better, also because there were more companies producing them and improving their technologies. Therefore, from the rejection of Saturn EV1 whose explanation even motivated conspiracy theories, the late 2000s saw the following generations of Toyota Prius consolidating it as a huge commercial success, which helped to build the vision of hybrids and EVs as a symbol of the next times. But there was still one smaller problem, but still important: these cars got more efficient, much more beautiful and even a little cheaper, but the personality matter wasn’t solved yet. The common cars’ “green versions” managed to conciliate both sides a little better, but if you wanted to be totally ecological it still took giving up some of those subjective factors which have built the modern cars’ fame.

And now is the moment to invite Mercedes-Benz’s release. The enormous technological advances of the latest times have allowed also big improvements to the EVs, but now finally dedicated to their personality. Now buying a hybrid or electric version (such as Ford Fusion Hybrid) or entire model (like Renault Zoe) doesn’t have to mean taking worse performance and lack of luxury inside the same external body, and Mercedes’ latest release is an excellent example of that. When would you expect an electric version to be 177 hp more powerful than the gasoline one? Well, SLS has not only done it as also maintaining its own interior sophistication level. This comes from nothing less than four electric engines (one at each wheel) to, combined, generate 740 hp (!) and 1000 Nm of torque. This allows it to make 0 to 60 mph in 3s9, but the top speed was limited at 155 mph probably due to safety reasons. Only the batteries weigh 1208 pounds (the autonomy wasn’t revealed), but this car received the same high performance preparation as the gasoline versions. There are huge carbon brake calipers, and the AMG Torque Dynamics system can provide traction to each wheel the needed amount and even work in three modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. SLS Electric Drive will start its sales in a few months.

Takeout now lets you download your own YouTube videos

This Quick-Tip is about accessing your own YouTube videos, using Google's Takeout / Data-liberation service.

If you upload a video using the Blogger Post Editor's video icon, then it's stored in Google Videos - which is now retired except for the part that hosts vids uploaded thru Blogger.   (This was where they were being put  the last time I checked, which was a few months ago)

Many people dislike this, and prefer to upload their vids to YouTube first, and then link to the YouTube video from Blogger.  This gives
      • Better control over the size of the video you display in your blog / website
      • Video management tools (sorely lacking in Google Videos).
      • Statistics about viewers
      • The chance to earn money separately from your blog if your video becomes popular
      • Access to many more YoutTube features.
This is similar to the recommendation to upload pictures to Picasa independently of the post-editor, and putting them into your posts via the URL - it just gives you more control.

Now you can use Google Takeout to download a copy of the original for videos that you have uploaded to YouTube - without changing the format.   This is different to YouTube's download function, which only lets you download a transformed/transcoded version (eg a .wmv I just checked was available for download from YouTube as .mp4).

This can be used if you are:

      Suzuki Grand Vitara

Nokia unveils Asha 308 and 309

Nokia will connect more people with their latest additions to the Asha series. Today, they've unveiled two new models, Nokia Asha 308 and Nokia Asha 309. Both the models has full capacitive touch screen display with fluid 'Swipe' user interface to keep pace with present smartphone manufacturing trends. Another good news for Nokia brand lovers - these two models probably will cost under US$ 99.00 and will be available by this year (fourth quarter they said).
                           Nokia Asha 308 and 309

Asha 308 will be dual SIM with 'Easy Swap" and Asha 309 single SIM, both with new Nokia Xpress Browser for faster and smarter web browsing experience. You can have faith on what Timo Toikkanen, EVP of Mobile Phones, Nokia mentioned at the announcement ceremony-

"Our innovative Asha Touch family of devices is designed for people who want a great smartphone experience with lower running costs"
These two new semi-smartphone models will have 3.0 inch WQVGA touchscreen display, not bad for regular uses. For your entertainment, you could hear FM Radio, watch videos from YouTube, play in built games with 40 downloadable premium EA games.

There's some bad news also. You can't use 3G facilities as these models are only 2G enabled. For this reason, I've mentioned these as 'semi-smartphone'. Though, Asha 308 users could use multiple SIM, but, there's no Wi-Fi, only Asha 309 has this feature.

Get notified about changes in popularity of pages on your blog/site.

This Quick-Tip describes the alerts that Webmaster Tools are now offering for changes in search popularity of particular pages.

Google Webmaster Tools have added to their alerts features.

Basically, this means that they try to notice the changes "that could be most interesting for you", and send the website owner a message when they spot something.

You can view these messages in the Webmaster tools site, or by signing up inside Wesmaster Tools to have alerts forwarded to your email.

The newest(*) alert they added is for Search Queries.   ref:   http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ie/2012/08/search-queries-alerts-in-webmaster-tools.html

This features shows "impressions and clicks for your top pages over time."

      They say
"For most sites, these numbers follow regular patterns, so when sudden spikes or drops occur, it can make sense to look into what caused them. Some changes are due to differing demand for your content, other times they may be due to technical issues that need to be resolved, such as broken redirects. For example, a steady stream of clicks which suddenly drops to zero is probably worth investigating."

They're still working on what levels of change to report: it should be interesting to see how they cope with the wide variety of seasonal patterns.  For example, I have one site that has weekly content: each week's post builds interest in the preceeding three weeks, then has strong traffic until a certain day and then drops to pretty close to zero.   It will get popular again, but not until almost three years have passed - simply due to the niche that this blog is in.    Now, I don't want to be alerted to this, because it's pattern I know very well! But I wouldl be interested if they could tell me that the expected "strong growth in the last week" isn't happening.

(*)   I originally wrote this in late August, but somehow forgot to publish it.    Found it again just now, and decided to share it, even though it's not as fresh as it was then.    Hopfully it will still help someone.
